Cosplayer Interview

Cosplayer of the Week: Damien Campos

Leo Nocedo : How did you discover cosplaying?
Damien Campos : One night while out on the town I stumbled upon a Doctor Who convention. I later cosplayed at the same con.
Leo Nocedo :: What was your first cosplay?
Damien Campos : The original Master from Doctor Who.
Leo Nocedo : What are your next 3 cosplay plans?
Damien Campos : Randy The Intern. Gabriel from Scott Pilgrim vs the World. Roland Deschain from the Dark Tower series.
Leo Nocedo : Is there a type of character you cosplay frequently?
Damien Campos : My signature cosplay is Matt the Radar Technician. Most of my cosplays are of villains & run the obscure.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the most detailed cosplay you’ve ever done?
Damien Campos : An Immortan Joe inspired cosplay that consisted of a half-mask, make-up, bulky armor, and gun props.
Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite cosplay you’ve done?
Damien Campos : Matt the Radar Technician is my favorite. Along with being my signature cosplay I have the most fun with the character.
Leo Nocedo :What is your worst cosplay “horror” story?
Damien Campos : On the way to this year’s Megacon while busing it to Orlando a passenger with identical luggage who got off in Lakeland took my bag by mistake. Other than my Loki variant jacket which was with me on the bus all my cosplays for the con were gone. Ultimately I got my bag & cosplays back before the con was over but I missed most of the first two days of the con trying to rebuild/recover my cosplays.
Leo Nocedo : What’s your funniest cosplay story?
Damien Campos : It would have to have been attending the Matt Run at Dragoncon. I was with a group of about a dozen Matt the Radar Technicians. We ran through the connecting hotels chanting things like Kylo Ren is Shredded! At one point at my direction we descended on a TARDIS chanting Doctor Who is shredded. We drew a big crowd & it was clear the Doctor Who cosplayers had no idea what was going on.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the best in-character interaction you’ve ever had?
Damien Campos : While cosplaying as the Master I once crashed a Doctor Who photoshoot of all the various Doctors. The photoshoot concluded with the crowd taking pics of me squaring off against all the Doctors.
Leo Nocedo : What are your go-to stores for cosplay materials/full cosplays?
Damien Campos : Amazon & Etsy.
Leo Nocedo : Have you ever had someone mistake you for a different character?
Damien Campos : While cosplaying as Fscoiety from Mr. Robot most people thought I was the Monopoly Man. My Immortan Joe was mistaken for Bane, and my Matt the Radar Technician was strangely once mistaken for Luke Skywalker.
Leo Nocedo : List all the cosplays you’ve done.
Damien Campos : The Master. The 10th Doctor. Immortan Joe. Ghoul from The Purge Anarchy. T-800. A Jason /Punisher mashup. Dracula from Bram Stroker’s Dracula. Matt the Radar Technician. FScoiety. The Great Intelligence from Doctor Who. Joker/Matt the Radar Technician mashup. Wild Dog from Arrow. Norman Bates. Mr. Glass. Pennywise. Buddi Chucky from Child’s Play 2019. TVA Loki.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the biggest con you’ve cosplayed at?
Damien Campos : Dragoncon
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer cosplaying characters with props, or characters that you don’t need to carry a prop around all day?
Damien Campos : Depends on the con. At busy, crowded cons like Dragoncon I prefer simpler cosplays with less props.
Leo Nocedo :Have you ever lost a cosplay piece at a con?
Damien Campos : I lost a lightsaber at Dragoncon. I was carrying a bunch of stuff & put it down somewhere & ended up walking off. On several occasions I lost gloves. At more than one con I was forced to carry on wearing a single glove.
Leo Nocedo :Have you ever bought a cosplay piece at a con?
Damien Campos : Yes. I bought prop guns, badges, arm bands, and masks to complete existing cosplays.
Leo Nocedo :Do you prefer to buy or make cosplays?
Damien Campos : I tend to purchase most of my cosplay pieces piecemeal.
Leo Nocedo : What is your ultimate dream cosplay? Probably a screen accurate Dark Helmet from Spaceballs.
Leo Nocedo :What’s the most difficult cosplay you’ve ever done? (Craftsmanship, wearing of, ect)
Damien Campos : The Purge Anarchy Ghoul. Instead of using face paint I wore a porcelain mask. It was near impossible to breathe in. I had to remove it every few minutes. I’ve had similar problems with my Wild Dog & Pennywise masks but the Ghoul was the worst.
Leo Nocedo :What’s the most difficult character makeup you’ve done?
Damien Campos : In my first outing as Buddi Chucky I wore makeup to give myself a plastic look. Since then I’ve chosen to forego the makeup when cosplaying the character.
Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite part of cosplaying?                                                                                 Damien Campos : Meeting people, especially other cosplayers. I also love it when people react positively to cosplays, especially my more obscure ones.
Leo Nocedo : Make up your own question!
Damien Campos : What’s cons would you like to attend that you haven’t.
Damien Campos : Of course San Diego Comic Con, but probably New York Comic Con.
