I have to admit, I don’t really play mobile games. So when I first heard about Marvel Snap it made me remember several terrible Marvel mobile games that I attempted to play and really disliked, but some friends of mine, old VS. System players kept badgering me to try Marvel Snap, so I did, and honestly I love it!
For veterans of the legendary Upper DeckVS. System TCG era, stepping into Marvel Snap is like a homecoming. This fast-paced collectible card game captures the thrill of those epic comic book battles between teams of Marvel and DC Comic characters (but minus the DC), injecting a fresh dose of innovation that’s earned it multiple Game of the Year awards. It’s a nostalgic marvel (pun intended) for anyone who reveled in the strategic clashes of the UDE VS. System, or just has a love for comic book super heroes in general.
Echoing the VS. System’s depth, Marvel Snap pits iconic Marvel Super Heroes and Villains against each other (or you can build a team with both heroes and baddies), each card a powerhouse of unique abilities. Marvel Snap is very easy and anyone can learn the ropes in minutes, then dive into lightning-quick matches that last just around five minutes. It’s a perfect blend of strategy and adrenaline, fitting seamlessly into any busy schedule. Marvel Snap is a PVP game with millions of players and I don’t think that I have ever played the same person twice, their is very little communication between players other than some in-game emotes and a few taunting text emotes just to bust your opponents chops or thank them for a good game. I feel like eventually the Marvel Snap emotes can use a revamp of sorts as while they are fun to use I think they are a little lackluster. I also feel the same about the user profile system with the avatars and character tag lines.
To me, crafting your perfect deck of twelve characters, each card pulsating with the essence of a beloved Marvel character is one of the best parts. Unleashing their powers, and devising cunning strategies, and outmaneuvering your opponent in electrifying showdowns that capture the very soul of Marvel’s sprawling universe.
The best part? Marvel Snap isn’t chained to one platform. Wage war on your mobile device, conquer on PC via Steam, or dominate the battlefield from your Mac. It’s Marvel mayhem, anytime, anywhere.
Marvel Snap isn’t just a game; it’s an invitation to a world where fabled super powered characters collide in thrilling card-based battles. Whether you’re a seasoned card game veteran or a wide-eyed newcomer, Marvel Snap promises an exhilarating ride through the Marvel Universe.
As a long time VS. System player, judge and tournament organizer I do feel that some character and location balancing issues exist and certain aspects feel “niche,” but the overall experience is incredibly rewarding, especially the ease of progression compared to other card games. Plus, the rollback system adds a unique layer of strategy and keeps the game fresh each season with a new story and new characters. The pros for me are that I have a game I can play everyday that I truly love, and it’s a take on the old UDE VS. System. Whether it’s the gameplay, the awesome music or the mechanics and the card effects, it’s just nostalgic for me. The cons for me are, way too many variants, I don’t even care for variant covers on actual comics. I do understand that these companies have to make money, I don’t expect everything for free, I am sure that they have many costs such as servers, hosting and paying employees, but Marvel Snap sometimes feels like it’s begging for money with lot’s of high priced variant sets, which sometimes include avatars and character tag lines for a players user profile and others that offer credits, boosters, and gold to help you level. All this is just fodder to me because if you play the grind long enough you eventually get this stuff anyway.
In any case I can’t complain as I do play pretty much everyday. If you wanna join in you can download Marvel Snap for free on virtually any device and delve into a world where strategy, speed, and Marvel’s legendary heroes and villains converge in an epic clash that’s taking the gaming world by storm.
Lastly if you want to try out the VS. System, UDE does still produce a version of it known as VS2PCG.
