Cosplayer Interview

Cosplayer Of The Week: Jack McMahon

Leo Nocedo : How did you discover cosplaying?
Jack McMahon: I discovered cosplay in high school. My older brother took me to my first convention. When there I met people who would become my coworkers at my second high school job.

Leo Nocedo : What was your first cosplay?

Jack McMahon: The first cosplay I did was Arsonal from the CW show Arrow. It was homemade out of an old tshirt that I wore over a hoodie. The overall look wasn’t great but I wanted to try my hand at making something.

Leo Nocedo : What are your next 3 cosplay plans?
Jack McMahon: My next three cosplans are Spiderman in his homecoming suit because I’m not an overly confident person with my body and that suit is more loose fit, Steven Universe because the show was overall a great influence in my life and I love the character, and Cal Kestis because he isn’t an overly popular star wars character and he overall suits my personality.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever been in a cosplay contest?
Jack McMahon: I’ve never been in a cosplay contest.

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer sewing, armor making, or wig working?
Jack McMahon: I prefer wig work. I’m kind of new to it because normally I would just not wear a wig but lately I’ve been doing more anime cosplays that involve me having to wear a wig.

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to do photoshoots at cons or at specific locations?
Jack McMahon: I prefer taking more photos on cons because it seems like a more comfortable location for me because I’m normally timid and shy.

Leo Nocedo : Is there a type of character you cosplay frequently?
Jack McMahon: Lately on my cosplay tik tok channel I’ve been doing Mirio Togata aka Lemillion from My Hero Academia and Starlord because people say I look Mirio with reddish brown hair and with starlord i look as similar as a love child of chris pratt and chris evans.
Leo Nocedo : Do you have any favorite cosplayers?  I found on tik tok and I worked with another one at Universals Volcano Bay. There names are Jordan Johnson, Taya Miller, Kotjcosplay, Airpotatocosplay, Jensenavenger, Justjaredcosplay, McSpiderman, and Makaylacosplay
Leo Nocedo : What’s the most detailed cosplay you’ve ever done?
Jack McMahon: The most detail I’ve done on cosplay is Lemillion. Actually I’m still missing two components being his boots and mask but I found a place to get them from.

Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite cosplay you’ve done?
Jack McMahon: I’ve done is Jack Frost when I was in high school because me and my best cosplay friend Emmett worked together on making What is your favorite cosplay you’ve done?My favorite cosplay the jacket so I hold that experience with me when I wear the cosplay forever.

Leo Nocedo : What is your worst cosplay “horror” story?
Jack McMahon: The worst cosplay Horror story I have is when me and my friend Kendal went both as Ruby Rose from RWBY. I genderbend the character and called him Crimson Rose and it was bad because the material I used needed to be washed and when it came out everything except the shirt shrunk so I had to compromise and in the middle of the convention my scythe broke and My cape ripped. It was an overall disaster.

Leo Nocedo : What’s your funniest cosplay story?
Jack McMahon: My funniest cosplay story was I was trying to do a genderbent scarlet witch at Orlando Mega Con 2019 but it looked so similar to Star Lord everyone kept playing hooked on a feeling when I walked by them because they thought it would be funny.

Leo Nocedo : What’s the best in-character interaction you’ve ever had?
Jack McMahon: I wore a Jaune Arc hoodie to the Roosterteeth Expo with my brother and this girl in a Ruby Rose dress came up gave me a monster and we quoted the lines “so we’re hiding by the punch bowl” and she said “yep” and then we clinked the cans and both said “to the socially awkward”.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever cosplayed with a family member?
Jack McMahon: No even though my brother and I go to conventions together we have our own cosplay schedule and we never really set anything up for it.

Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite cosplay photo of yourself?
Jack McMahon: My favorite cosplay photo is me dressed as Jack Frost meeting Danielle Panabaker at Orlando Mega Con because for one thing she played killer frost an iced based villain/hero on the CW Flash and we were making ice jokes to each other after the photo was taken it was something I reminisce on whenever I look at the photo.

Leo Nocedo : What are your go-to stores for cosplay materials/full cosplays?
Jack McMahon: I mainly go on amazon, etsy, or ebay to find props or certain pieces to cosplays I may need at some point. If I go anywhere else I would chose Joann Fabrics or Marshalls and rarely Party City for supplies

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to buy pre-styled wigs or style your own?
Jack McMahon: I’m trying my hand at styling my own wigs from now on due to people I order from not actually putting in the effort.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever had someone mistake you for a different character?
Jack McMahon: Like I said in the previous question I was doing a gender bent scarlet witch and people mistook me for starlord at one point.

Leo Nocedo : List all the cosplays you’ve done.
Jack McMahon: Jack Frost, Arsonal, Green Arrow, Scarlet Witch, Riku from Kingdom Hearts, Star Lord, Wreck It Ralph, Among Us Red, Steve from Stranger Things, Lemillion from My Hero Academia, Jaune Arc from RWBY, and my gender bent Ruby Rose AKA Crimson Rose.

Leo Nocedo : What’s the biggest con you’ve cosplayed at?
Jack McMahon: I’ve only been to two conventions RTX and Mega Con Orlando between those I preferred MegaCon and find it slightly bigger than the other one.

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer cosplaying characters with props, or characters that you don’t need to carry a prop around all day?
Jack McMahon: It varies on the cosplay. Honestly I feel like if the cosplay calls for the prop I would use it if not I won’t unless I plan on taking photos or recording certain Tik Toks for my channel.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever lost a cosplay piece at a con?
Jack McMahon: When I did the scarlet witch cosplay I put the jacket down and left my seat for a minute and next thing I know the cosplay jacket was gone and I purchased a new jacket but it was Star lords from a company called Lucca Designs.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever bought a cosplay piece at a con?
Jack McMahon: I bought a keyblade for my riku cosplay when I was at the first day of Mega Con even though I had no plans to do that cosplay the rest of the weekend.

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to cosplay solo or in a group?
Jack McMahon: I prefer both. I honestly love to try and plan things with friend but if it doesn’t work out I enjoy the solo experience so I can meet new friends and potential Cosplay enthusiasts as well.

Leo Nocedo : If you had a chance to meet your all-time favorite cosplayer, what would you say to them?
Jack McMahon: If I could meet any of the cosplayers I follow on social media I would thank them because they’re the reason I even got into cosplaying on social media and gained support so I can do more cosplays and put out more content for my fans.

Leo Nocedo : Have you ever done a cosplay panel?
Jack McMahon: I’ve never done a cosplay panel but if someone were to offer I would definitely say yes it may be an awkward panel because I have stage fright but after a while I get comfortable with the idea and just role with it.

Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to buy or make cosplays?
Jack McMahon: I prefer to buy because I’m overly critical with myself and find most of my cosplays that I paid for better than the ones I made.

Leo Nocedo: If you could tell your past self anything about cosplay, what would you say?
Jack McMahon: I would tell him to prepare better for cosplaying primarily by telling him to save up better because cosplay is an expensive hobby and even though I get support on social media by getting donations from fans I can’t help but wonder what it would be like if I never did social media like this.

Leo Nocedo : What is your ultimate dream cosplay?
Jack McMahon: My ultimate cosplay dream is to become popular enough at cosplay so I can get paid to do what I love on the side while also performing my soon to be career as a teacher with my friends who cosplay too.

Leo Nocedo : What’s the most difficult cosplay you’ve ever done? (Craftsmanship, wearing of, ect)
Jack McMahon: The most difficult cosplay I’ve ever done is lemillion because that suit compresses on my body a bit and I’m not comfortable with my body at all and feel as if I’m disgusting wearing it.

Leo Nocedo : What, in your opinion, makes a cosplayer a “pro” cosplayer?
Jack McMahon: A pro cosplayer is someone that people can recognize specifically when they’re wearing their signature cosplay in public and people look up to them. I feel like I’m not there yet and in fact nowhere near it I have a lot of work to do if I want to be that person.

Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite part of cosplaying?
Jack McMahon: My favorite part of cosplaying is meeting the other people who do it so I can make new friends and learn more about cosplaying through them

Leo Nocedo : Where can people find your cosplays?
Jack McMahon: My cosplays are all over my tik tok channel Jackfrost1106 please follow the support helps me to keep going.
