Steven Newport : My first real exposure to cosplay, before it was even really being referred to as such, was thanks to Star Trek Conventions! While conventions have exploded in popularity, back when they were small, little things held in conference rooms, people would wear Starfleet Uniforms.

CWC : Before Facebook, and Myspace, Two groups of friends in different parts of the country, Orlando and Chicago, got together to bring smiles to children. Victoria Amanda Bradley : I first encountered cosplay while working my first job at SeaWorld back in 2008. I would see costumes (now knowing the proper term cosplayers) walking on Idrive twice a year. I always thought it was so cool but never knew what was happening. Fast-forward to 2017 (so 9 years later) I started my career job, going through a separation and needed an outlet to handle the stress. My little brother was into gaming and been exposed to cosplaying. He asked me to join him at Megacon a week before.

Jamie Mcpherson: When I managed a comic book store, I went to the Diamonds Convention. It was considered a “trade show” mostly back then. We were dealers, along with publishers. One of the comic companies was promoting their new “Vamparella” series. They hired a model that hung out with Stan Lee. I discovered a few “hired models” were there to promote their product. I realized this was a good way to show it, outside of dressing for Halloween.
Leo Nocedo : How did you discover cosplaying?
Cat Gladden : I discovered cosplaying back in 2013 through Ashley Eckstein’s company, Her Universe. Ashley did a vlog at a Star Wars Celebration and seeing all of the magnificent costumes made me want to start bringing characters to life!

Brittney Marie : I discovered it in high school.My guy friends would oggle over these girls and guys because they looked so much like a character. Growing up as a huge gamer I always wondered what it would be like to be a character, to look like them and wield their weapons.

OhMySophii : In 2009 my best friend took me to Akon in Dallas, TX! I had seen cosplay on tv before – but never thought it was something that was accessible to me. We went to Akon and the community absolutely blew me away! I fell in love instantly with dressing up and soon, with making!

Betty Jane : Eek, forever ago, I enjoyed making up Characters and their costumes, I believe Lady Jane of Krondor Krew was my first.

Dylan Guarisco :Going to Disney world when I was young, I always wanted to become a costumed character like at the Disney parks. When I went to a Star Wars convention for my 12th birthday, I learned about the 501st legion for costuming Star Wars characters. I immediately did research into costuming for events like the 501st and learned about costuming at conventions like comic cons. I decided to buy a spider-man costume on my 15th birthday and bought a pig’s mask and this created Spider-pig from the Simpsons movie for a mini convention in my hometown. I got so much love and attention at the convention I wanted to explore more opportunities and started locating and attending conventions in my state and the rest is history.
