The J. Wayne Reitz Student Union at the University of Florida came alive on March 29-30 as SwampCon 2025 brought together anime lovers, gamers, cosplayers, and pop culture fans for a weekend of nonstop excitement. Organized by the Gator Anime student group, this free, fan-run convention offered panels, performances, shopping, and gaming—all in a welcoming, inclusive environment.
A Celebration of All Things Geek
From the moment doors opened, attendees were greeted with a bustling Artist Alley filled with original artwork, prints, and handmade crafts. Nearby, the Vendor Hall offered collectibles, manga, and unique merchandise. Fans lined up early for popular events like the Maid Café, where volunteers in elegant costumes served snacks and hosted games.
Gaming, Cosplay, and Performances
Gaming enthusiasts competed in tournaments for Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart, while casual players enjoyed free-play arcades. The Cosplay Contest showcased incredible craftsmanship, with awards for Best in Show and Judges’ Choice.
As evening fell, the convention shifted to entertainment, with anime karaoke, comedy skits, and a nerd trivia night that tested fans’ knowledge.
A Convention for Everyone
SwampCon’s commitment to inclusivity shone throughout the weekend. With family-friendly activities, strict anti-harassment policies, and a welcoming atmosphere, the event ensured all attendees—regardless of age, gender, or fandom—felt at home.
A Passion Project by Fans, for Fans
Run entirely by unpaid student volunteers, SwampCon remains one of Florida’s few free fan conventions. Funded through university programs and sponsorships, every dollar went back into improving the event.
