Mark your calendars—I, Tyrant, the highly anticipated new series from rising star writer ee Zann and artist Godfarr, is set to launch in July from Image Comics. This action-packed, mythical ongoing series promises to deliver a fresh, bold take on the comic book world.
The story of I, Tyrant brings together fierce action and mythical storytelling. It’s a mix of 300-style brutality and Birdman’s magical realism. At the heart of the series is Zahhak, a legendary figure whose stark portrayal of tyrants shakes the very foundation of the myths surrounding him. He proposes a daring retelling of Hafez’s myth, demanding a new direction for the tale—one that echoes Kirby’s grand style and Miller’s gritty, rebooted approach to storytelling. It’s a creation myth that’s as bold and unpredictable as the comic industry itself.
As writer ee Zann explains: “1979 Iran banned comics—and never looked twice. This might be a nonsense song where I come from, but I, Tyrant is a no-nonsense self-portrait of an expat and his ode to Miller, Kirby, and all comics Americana.”
Godfarr, the series’ artist, adds: “We tried to summon the spirit of Kirby. Zann summoned a thousand notes instead. Fourteen years of Miller moods and midnight redraws of Zahhak. While we two make whoopee, you be careful when you open I, Tyrant.”
