Standing at the center of that conflict is Melcrose, a teenage girl who has no idea she’s carrying the very thing the Gray Alliance’s god-emperor has spent ages searching for. Her discovery could alter the fate of humanity—or doom it entirely.

It’s an ambitious amount of mythology and world-building to introduce in a debut issue, and that’s both NiFe WARS #1’s greatest strength and its biggest gamble.

Melcrose serves as the reader’s introduction to the world of NiFe WARS, beginning her journey alongside her family and her Cipher AI companion, Lumina. Their lives are shattered when the Gray Alliance launches a devastating assault on Neo Tokyo, forcing Melcrose and her younger brother, Kaelen, to flee with little more than their father’s sword and Lumina’s guidance. Behind the invasion stands Emperor Temeluchus, a villain who feels less like a conventional tyrant and more like an ancient force of nature. He’s spent countless generations searching for someone exactly like Melcrose, and now that she’s been found, the fate of humanity hangs in the balance.

At its core, this is a classic origin story: a family torn apart, a reluctant young hero thrust into an impossible conflict, and mysterious abilities that have yet to fully awaken. The familiar framework is no accident. NiFe WARS proudly embraces its anime and shonen inspirations, drawing from the same “ordinary person thrust into an extraordinary destiny” blueprint that has fueled series like Dragon Ball and Attack on Titan. Rather than disguising those influences, the book treats them as part of its identity while building its own mythology around them.

Where the writing stands out is in its willingness to look beyond the large-scale action. Beneath the alien empires, futuristic technology, and universe-spanning conflict is a story about inheritance, responsibility, and the burden of fighting a war you never asked to join. That emotional foundation gives the spectacle genuine weight and keeps the characters from being overshadowed by the world-building.

It also leaves the series with plenty of momentum. Early details about issue #2 suggest Melcrose will suffer another devastating loss when she’s separated from Lumina before facing Emperor Temeluchus directly, a confrontation that promises to trigger the awakening of the mysterious power known as Pink Adallium. If the creative team can continue balancing its expanding mythology with meaningful character development, NiFe WARS has the potential to grow into something much larger than its promising first issue.

If the story reaches for an ambitious scope, the artwork is what truly brings that ambition to life. Lead artist Serg Acuña handles the entire interior—pencils, inks, and colors—and his work gives NiFe WARS #1 a distinct identity from the very first page. Rather than feeling like a collection of familiar sci-fi influences, the world has a sense of history and purpose, thanks largely to Acuña’s detailed designs and confident visual storytelling.

His experience on titles such as Nightwing, Birds of Prey, and Batman: Urban Legends, along with projects for BOOM! Studios and his work on Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots and Scavengers Reign, is evident throughout the issue. Melcrose’s cybernetic-inspired design, the vibrant Adallium energy effects, and the unsettling appearance of the Abboritions all reflect an artist who understands how to make a new universe feel cohesive and believable.

What makes Acuña’s contribution especially impressive is that this doesn’t feel like an artist experimenting on an independent project. It feels like a seasoned professional relishing the opportunity to create something from the ground up instead of working within the boundaries of an established franchise. That enthusiasm comes through on nearly every page, giving NiFe WARS #1 a visual identity that’s every bit as memorable as its sprawling mythology.

The cover gallery is another area where NiFe WARS #1 makes a strong first impression, offering something that should appeal to collectors as much as readers. Rather than relying on a single eye-catching variant, the launch issue features four covers from an impressive roster of established artists.

The lineup includes Mostafa Moussa, whose career spans more than 25 years with work for Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse; Bruno Abdias, the Brazilian artist who won Top Cow’s 2022 Talent Hunt from a field of thousands and has since become an artist on Detective Comics; and Bella Rachlin, whose painted illustrations have become familiar to collectors through Marvel’s Upper Deck trading card sets. It’s an unusually accomplished group of creators for the debut issue of a brand-new independent publisher.

That level of artistic talent doesn’t happen by accident. Bringing together a lineup like this demonstrates a clear commitment to presentation and gives the launch an added sense of prestige. Regardless of how readers ultimately feel about the story itself, NiFe WARS #1 arrives looking every bit like a project designed to stand out on the shelves.

This is where NiFe WARS #1 breaks away from the traditional comic book launch. Rather than arriving as a standard first issue, it’s packaged as a blind-bag collectible with a print run limited to 5,000 copies worldwide. Inside that release are thirteen cover variants—including four one-of-one sketch covers—and every copy contains an embedded NFC chip that links to a digital ownership record.

That approach reflects the property’s unusual history. NiFe WARS began life in 2022 as a blockchain-based comic project before evolving into a physical publication, and traces of that origin remain woven into its release strategy. Whether that’s a selling point depends on what you’re looking for. Readers focused solely on the story may see the blind bags, variant covers, and NFC technology as little more than an interesting novelty surrounding an ambitious debut. Collectors, on the other hand, are likely to appreciate the emphasis on scarcity, authenticated ownership, and limited-edition presentation. NiFe WARS #1 is a confident and visually impressive debut that makes its ambitions clear from the outset. This is a franchise being built with the long game in mind, extending well beyond the printed page. Plans for an anime adaptation are already underway, with a trailer produced by Powerhouse Animation, the studio behind Castlevania and Blood of Zeus, signaling that the creators envision a much larger multimedia universe.

The first issue doesn’t reinvent the sci-fi or shonen playbook, but it doesn’t need to. Its familiar storytelling is elevated by a sincere emotional foundation, an expansive mythology, and artwork that consistently sells the scale of its world. Melcrose is a compelling protagonist with plenty of room to grow, and the mysteries surrounding her give readers a reason to come back for the next chapter.

Whether NiFe WARS becomes a lasting franchise will ultimately depend on how well it develops its characters alongside its increasingly ambitious mythology. Based on this opening issue, however, the foundation is undeniably solid. Fans of shonen-inspired science fiction, sprawling cosmic conflicts, and richly realized world-building will find plenty to enjoy here, while collectors will appreciate a launch that has been crafted with as much attention to presentation as storytelling. NiFe WARS #1 may not change the landscape overnight, but it delivers a strong first chapter that leaves its universe feeling full of possibility.
