Happy Holidays and welcome everyone to the 103rd edition of Spandex and Suplexes: A Wrestling Review. In this special issue, I will be looking back at 2021 and naming the winners of the third annual Spandex and Suplexes Year End Awards! If you are interested in seeing past winners, you can see the winners of 2019 and 2020. Let’s get started.

Male Wrestler of the Year:

Kenny Omega

2021 Highlights –
1. Defeated Rich Swann at Impact Wrestling Rebellion in a Winner Takes All Match to retain the AEW World Championship and win the Impact World Championship
2. Defeated Sami Callihan at Impact Wrestling Slammiversary in a No Disqualification match to retain the Impact World Championship.
3. Wrestled Bryan Danielson to a Time Limit Draw at AEW Grand Slam
4. Wrestled “Hangman” Adam Page at AEW Full Gear for the AEW World Championship.
5. Simultaneously held the AEW World Championship, Impact World Championship, and AAA Mega Championship from April 25th to August 13th.

 

Female Wrestler of the Year:

Deonna Purrazzo

2021 Highlights –
1. Defeated Jazz at Impact Wrestling Hardcore Justice in a Title vs. Career match to retain the Impact Knockouts World Championship and end Jazz’s in-ring career.
2. Defeated Thunder Rosa at Impact Wrestling Slammiversary to retain the Impact Knockouts World Championship.
3. Defeated Faby Apache at AAA Triplemanía XXIX in a Champion vs. Champion match to retain the Impact Knockouts World Championship and win the AAA Reina de Reinas Championship.
4. Wrestled Mickie James at Impact Wrestling Bound for Glory for the Impact Knockouts World Championship.
5. Held the Impact Knockouts World Championship for 343 days (November 14, 2020 – October 23, 2021).

 

Tag Team of the Year:

The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson)

2021 Highlights –
1. Defeated Death Triangle (Pac and Rey Fenix) on the 4/14 edition of AEW Dynamite to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
2. Defeated Jon Moxley and Eddie Kingston at AEW Double or Nothing to retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
3. Wrestled The Lucha Brothers (Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fenix) at AEW All Out in a Steel Cage match for the AEW World Tag Team Championships.
4. Teamed with Adam Cole to defeat Christian Cage and Jurassic Express (Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus) at AEW Full Gear.
5. Became the longest reining AEW World Tag Team Champions at 302 days (November 7, 2020 – September 5, 2021).
