Cosplayer Interview

Cosplayer of the Week: Brittney Marie

Leo Nocedo : How did you discover cosplaying?
Brittney Marie : I discovered it in high school. My guy friends would oggle over these girls and guys because they looked so much like a character. Growing up as a huge gamer I always wondered what it would be like to be a character, to look like them and wield their weapons.
Leo Nocedo : What was your first cosplay?
Brittney Marie : Foxy the pirate fox from five nights at freddys.
Leo Nocedo : What are your next 3 cosplay plans?
Brittney Marie : Bayonetta, spoiler, 70s Starfire
Leo Nocedo :Have you ever been in a cosplay contest?
Brittney Marie : Yes. Even if I know I won’t place I take. As a chance to show off what I made.
Leo Nocedo :Do you prefer sewing, armor making, or wig working?
Brittney Marie : Sewing and wig working. I’m still new to making my own stuff.
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to do photoshoots at cons or at specific locations?
Brittney Marie : At cons. There’s been times I’ve been in my way to a shoot and end up meeting some amazing cosplayers from the same fandom and it opens up an opportunity to meet new people.
Leo Nocedo : Is there a type of character you cosplay frequently?
Brittney Marie : I tend to gravitate towards the “I may be a girl but I don’t need help” kind of characters. (ie: Kitana from mortal kombat, Nico from devil may cry, Ada from resident evil)
Leo Nocedo :Do you have any favorite cosplayers?
Brittney Marie : I do! So many that have inspired me to do more stuff.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the most detailed cosplay you’ve ever done?
Brittney Marie : I would probably say this dress I made for froppy for a casual outing to universal studios.
Leo Nocedo : What are your top 3 craftsmanship tips?
Brittney Marie : 1. Take. Your. Time. 2. Do not compare yourself to others 3. Make sure it makes YOU happy.
Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite cosplay you’ve done?
Probably Akali’s Pop/star skin, any form of Kitana, black widow and Nico Goldstein
Leo Nocedo :What is your worst cosplay “horror” story? This past holiday matsuri I was on my way to look for something and ran into this sweet guy.
Brittney Marie : He gave me an akali button (I had on her all out bunny suit I made) and while talking to him the top bursts open and I only had on a cheer lace bra under it. Thank god for this human, he held the back together and escorted me to the cosplay repair guy and made sure I fixed it before leaving. Shout out to that sweet amazing human.
Leo Nocedo : What’s your best cosplay story?
Brittney Marie : Spring spooky 2019, I was in my bishoujo Jason Voorhees. I’m a HUGE F13 fan, and I was doing a shoot with my friends Tristan and Marta (who o absolutely adore. Tristan is an AMAZING photographer and Marta does breathtaking artwork!) something had caught my attention so I looked away for a second and when I turn back, no other than KANE FREAKING HODDER IS WALKING UP TO ME. He just points and says “hey you’re dressed like that we should get a photo”. Y’all. I fell over trying to see if this is real life. Tristan looks over and was like “brit you okay?” Before realizing what was happening. Needless to say, I got some pics.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the best in-character interaction you’ve ever had?
Brittney Marie : This is also another spooky story. Spring spooky 2021, I was dressed as Jamie Lloyd from halloween 4 in her clown suit. I was standing around and turned and locked eyes with this michael myers cosplayer across the hall. We just stared at each other and he walked over, and I walked over. Every movement he made I mirrored. It was adorable in a weird way.
Leo Nocedo :Have you ever cosplayed with a family member? Does my dog count?
Brittney Marie : I recently got a puppy for my anxiety and her first cosplay was a quickly sewn together Vision cosplay.
Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite cosplay photo of yourself?
Brittney Marie : Definitely has to be my battle damage mk2 Kitana.
Leo Nocedo : What are your go-to stores for cosplay materials/full cosplays?
Brittney Marie : Amazon for full cosplays, joanns for materials.
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to buy pre-styled wigs or style your own?
Brittney Marie : Depends. I don’t mind styling it if I need to in a pinch but ore styled definitely.
Leo Nocedo : Have you ever had someone mistake you for a different character?
Brittney Marie : I’ve been called sub zero while dressed as Kitana.
Leo Nocedo : List all the cosplays you’ve done.

Leo Nocedo :What’s the biggest con you’ve cosplayed at?
Brittney Marie : Megacon
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer cosplaying characters with props, or characters that you don’t need to carry a prop around all day? It honestly all depends on how I feel.
Brittney Marie : Most my characters have Easy props so it’s more of do I wanna actually carry it or not.
Leo Nocedo : Have you ever lost a cosplay piece at a con?
Brittney Marie : Several times.
Leo Nocedo : Have you ever bought a cosplay piece at a con?
Brittney Marie : My ears for Ahri
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to cosplay solo or in a group?
Brittney Marie : As a group.
Leo Nocedo :If you had a chance to meet your all-time favorite cosplayer, what would you say to them?
I actually have! Violet Cosplays was someone I looked up to for a long time. One day I walked into work and did a double take and we became coworkers. I finally had someone who understood not sleeping because the stitching on my hem wasn’t right.
Leo Nocedo :Have you ever done a cosplay panel?
Brittney Marie : I have. They’re so fun!
Leo Nocedo : Do you prefer to buy or make cosplays?
Brittney Marie : Depends on the character.
Leo Nocedo :If you could tell your past self anything about cosplay, what would you say?
Brittney Marie : Save. All. The money. And don’t exhaust yourself.
Leo Nocedo : What is your ultimate dream cosplay?
Brittney Marie : There’s so many. One that comes into mind is Ariel’s winter dress.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the most difficult cosplay you’ve ever done? (Craftsmanship, wearing of, ect)
Brittney Marie : Honestly, my All Out Ahri. The shoulder piece makes it akward to move and her wig to so long I need to just replace her.
Leo Nocedo : What’s the most difficult character makeup you’ve done?
Brittney Marie : Post combat Kitana. It takes a while to blend things to look more organic than painted on especially with latex.
Leo Nocedo :What, in your opinion, makes a cosplayer a “pro” cosplayer?
Brittney Marie : Someone who enjoys doing what they do, who isn’t afraid to lend out tips and tricks to help people out. Followers and sponsorships are great but a pro cosplayer to me is someone is is passionate and loves what they do whether or not they get recognized for it.
Leo Nocedo : What is your favorite part of cosplaying?
Brittney Marie : Getting to dress up and change my look. I’ve swapped cosplays and had friends not recognize me. It’s great.
Leo Nocedo : Make up your own question!
Brittney Marie : What is the hardest part about Cosplaying? (For me is honestly getting to a convention and remembering to function properly. Some cosplays restricts my ability to move or eat).
