From March 2020, we shine the spotlight on a true veteran of Florida’s music scene—Eddie Hill. With a career spanning more than fifty years, Eddie’s story is one of passion, perseverance, and an ever-evolving sound that reflects the vibrant history of funk, soul, and electro music in the Sunshine State.
Eddie’s musical journey began with The Voshays, a foundational experience that paved the way for the creation of Mirror, a band that quickly made waves in the local scene. Mirror released several 12″ records on their self-founded label, Get Off Records. Their early work in the 1970s was heavily inspired by the unmistakable groove of P-Funk, but as the decades rolled on, Mirror embraced the electric, high-energy sound of the mid-1980s breakdance era.
Beyond Mirror, Eddie contributed his guitar talents to a number of other Florida-based groups, including Pure Justice, Private Stock, and Contact Connection Band. His current band, Pocket Change, continues to bring joy to audiences with feel-good performances that resonate with listeners of all ages.
In this candid interview, Eddie opens up about the musicians and genres that influenced his style, the highs and lows of a career in music, and how staying true to his roots has kept him grounded. He also shares how Pocket Change has become more than just a band—it’s a source of happiness and community for people young and old.
Whether you’re a longtime funk fan or new to the scene, Eddie Hill’s story is a reminder of the enduring power of music to inspire, connect, and uplift.
