Hey Magic fans, I’ve got some exciting news to share!
Remember those incredible Magic: The Gathering comics featuring Elspeth? Well, if you missed them the first time around, or if you just want them all in one beautiful package, you’re in luck. Dark Horse Comics is collecting all four issues of Untold Stories—Elspeth into a paperback volume, hitting shelves in June 2026.
For those who haven’t ventured into the world of Theros Beyond Death yet, here’s the deal. Elspeth is dead. Struck down by the sun god Heliod himself out of pure jealousy, she finds herself trapped in the underworld. Sounds pretty final, right?
But here’s the thing about Elspeth. She doesn’t do despair. Instead of giving up, she’s forced to relive the worst moments of her life over and over again. And somehow, she emerges from each one stronger than before. Because when you’re a hero like Elspeth, even death is just another challenge to overcome. It’s a powerful story about resilience, redemption, and what it really means to be a hero. The narrative follows her escape from the underworld and shows us that her story isn’t over, even after death.
This series comes from an absolutely stellar creative team. Dan Watters, the mind behind Cyberpunk 2077 and Home Sick Pilots, brings his signature storytelling to the script. The artwork comes from Owen Gieni, known for his work on Manifest Destiny and Rat Queens. Hilary Jenkins handles the colors, bringing her experience from titles like Hairball and Slow Burn. And Clayton Cowles, who’s lettered everything from Helen of Wyndhorn to FML, rounds out the team.
The critics are absolutely loving it. Reviewers are raving about Owen’s gorgeous artwork and how beautifully he tells Elspeth’s story. The layouts, especially the pages showing her reliving past moments, are visually stunning and emotionally engaging. Hilary’s coloring gives the whole thing an almost Wonder Woman vibe that sets it apart from typical Magic comics. Everyone’s praising how the tension builds throughout and how accessible the story is, whether you’re new to Magic lore or a longtime fan.
The paperback won’t just be the four issues slapped together either. You’ll also get a sketchbook section and a cover art gallery, which is perfect for anyone who loves seeing the behind-the-scenes creative process. The whole package comes in at 112 pages and will be a gorgeous addition to any collection.
The paperback drops in bookstores on June 16, 2026 and in comic shops on June 17, 2026 (weird how that’s so backwards that it’s now your LCS who get’s it after book stores, but these are the times we live in now). It’s going for $19.99, and you can pre-order it right now from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or your local comic shop and bookstore. Whether you’re a longtime Planeswalker or just someone who loves a good underworld escape story, this collection is definitely worth checking out. Elspeth’s story deserves to be told, and this team is telling it beautifully.
See you in the underworld!
