If you haven’t been paying attention to your comic pull list lately, March is about to give you a very good reason to check back in. Image Comics just announced something pretty wild: they’re rolling out Invincible team-up variant covers across their entire lineup throughout the month, and honestly? The timing couldn’t be better.
With Season Four of the hit Prime Video series dropping on March 18th, Image is going all-in on celebrating Robert Kirkman, Cory Walker, and Ryan Ottley’s beloved superhero saga. And when I say “all-in,” I mean they’re letting Mark Grayson, Atom Eve, Omni-Man, and the rest of the crew crash basically every major Image series you can think of.
The concept is pretty straightforward but incredibly fun: special variant covers featuring Invincible characters teaming up with heroes from other Image universes. We’re talking about covers where the title logos get redesigned to match that iconic Invincible look. It’s the kind of crossover energy that makes you remember why variant covers can be so cool when done right.
Robert Kirkman himself seems genuinely hyped about it, saying “There isn’t a publisher in comics that’s better at hyping up media projects more than Image Comics! It’s a real honor for Cory, Ryan and me to see the creative community within Image rally around Invincible to celebrate the launch of our titanic fourth season of the show!”
The scope of this is pretty massive too. Throughout March, you’ll see these special variants on everything from Spawn and The Walking Dead Deluxe to Transformers, G.I. Joe, and even Geiger. The artist lineup reads like a who’s-who of comic talent: Gary Frank, David Finch, Brett Booth, Ryan Ottley, Charlie Adlard, Ivan Reis, and tons more.
Here’s what makes Invincible such a big deal in the first place: the original comic ran for 144 issues over 15 years, spawning multiple spin-offs and even that legendary crossover with Spider-Man. When the TV adaptation hit Prime Video in 2021, it became a genuine phenomenon, streaming in over 240 countries. Every season has been “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with seasons two and three both scoring perfect 100% ratings. The show’s already locked in for seasons four AND five, which tells you everything you need to know about its success.
The variants start dropping the first week of March and continue through the end of the month. Some highlights? Martin Simmonds putting his unique spin on The Department of Truth, Jason Fabok tackling Rook Exodus, and Skottie Young bringing his signature style to I Hate Fairyland. There’s even an Invincible Universe Battle Beast cover by Ryan Ottley himself.
Whether you’re a die-hard Invincible fan or just someone who appreciates creative variant covers, March is shaping up to be a really fun month for Image Comics. And if you’ve been meaning to check out the show before Season Four drops, well, now you’ve got the perfect excuse.
