Comic fans are about to get something seriously brutal this summer as Image Comics prepares to launch the brand-new ongoing series Hammerfist from superstar creator Rick Remender and acclaimed artist Steve Epting this August.
Described as “Reservoir Dogs meets Evil Dead,” the new series looks like a wild mix of crime, horror, violence, dark humor, and supernatural chaos. The story follows Mike Denton, a washed-up hitman and deadbeat father who suddenly finds himself standing between humanity and an ancient evil known as Black Noon.
According to the official announcement from Image Comics, Hammerfist will combine gritty crime storytelling with over-the-top splatter horror inspired by classic VHS-era genre films. Remender described the comic as “hard-R” and “wildly original,” while Epting called the series unpredictable, emotional, gritty, and violent in all the best ways.
The creative team behind the book alone has comic readers paying attention. Remender is known for fan-favorite titles like Deadly Class, Black Science, and Tokyo Ghost, while Epting is widely respected for his work on Captain America and Velvet.
Fans online already seem pretty hyped about the announcement, especially with the combination of Remender’s chaotic storytelling style and Epting’s darker realistic artwork. Early reactions have compared the series to everything from Hellboy to grindhouse horror films and ultra-violent cult comics.
Hammerfist #1 officially arrives in comic shops on August 26, 2026 and will feature multiple variant covers from artists including Jerome Opeña, Nic Klein, Dan Panosian, Daniel Acuña, and Andrew Robinson.
