Spinning out of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #1, almost the entire galaxy’s defenders have been blown through a black hole, including the Silver Surfer! But the story doesn’t end there… In order to fight back the oblivion, Surfer will have to fight to save his own soul and not lose himself to the void. Follow the Sentinel of the Spaceways on a journey that will change him forever! From superstars Donny Cates (VENOM, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY) and Tradd Moore (ALL-NEW GHOST RIDER, VENOM)!
Silver Surfer: Black is a beautiful book. Some of the character design is as stylistic and impressive as I’ve seen in comics. And the story is quite interesting, in hindsight. The biggest issue with the comic is that how the story is told, blow by blow narration from the main character, feels distant and removed. It’s hard to get into the action as things are happening, because the Silver Surfer sounds so bored with it all.
I’m much more excited about it all than he is, though. While this issue deals primarily with setting the stage and introducing the hook, it’s a great hook on an amazing stage. The art direction is down right enchanting, especially the villains he will encounter toward the end of the issue. Some of the poses are strange, and the book starts off lacking in detail, because of the amount of flashback we have to get through. But once it finds its pace, the reader is really in for a special ride.
And the special features of this director’s cut are fantastic. And there are TONS of special features. I love getting to see the artistic process and the changes at each step, but my favorite part is the unreal collection of cover art. I would have paid full price just for that!
Silver Surfer: Black #1 - Director's Cut Extras
A great looking comic with an interesting story, let down by a lackluster story-telling mechanic. Tons of bonus material in the director's cut, though, which more than makes up for any short coming.
