Fans of high-energy science fiction and creator-owned comics have a major new release to look forward to this summer as Image Comics gets ready to launch The Last Driver from acclaimed writer and artist Sean Gordon Murphy.
Murphy, who built a massive following through projects like Batman White Knight, Tokyo Ghost, and Punk Rock Jesus, is stepping into a gritty dystopian future where traditional driving has been outlawed and replaced by an automated transportation system known as the GRID.
The story centers around Clutch, an outlaw forced back behind the wheel in order to save his granddaughter. What starts as a desperate rescue quickly turns into a dangerous fight against government control, surveillance, and a society that has traded freedom for convenience. The setup already feels like the perfect playground for Murphy’s detailed art style and fast-paced storytelling.
One thing helping The Last Driver stand out immediately is how personal the project feels. Murphy’s longtime passion for cars and racing culture heavily inspired the series, giving the comic an authentic energy that comes through in the designs, environments, and action scenes. The book will even use a unique landscape-style format to better showcase the vehicles and large-scale chase sequences, which should make the reading experience feel very different from a standard comic.
The announcement has already created a lot of excitement among comic readers, especially fans of Murphy’s creator-owned work. Readers who loved the energy and worldbuilding of Tokyo Ghost are already paying close attention to this new project, and it is easy to see why. Between the dystopian setting, explosive action, and focus on car culture, The Last Driver already feels like one of the more unique comic launches coming this year.
The Last Driver #1 is scheduled to arrive in comic shops on Wednesday August 19th and looks ready to deliver a loud, fast, and chaotic ride for science fiction fans.
