Great Scott! Sean Gordon Murphy is going back to the printer again.
Image Comics has announced that The Last Driver #1 has sold out at the distributor level for the fourth time, with its latest printing disappearing on the very day it was released.
And Murphy is celebrating with a cover that should look awfully familiar to anyone who grew up watching Marty McFly and Doc Brown.
The upcoming fourth printing features brand-new artwork paying tribute to Back to the Future, fulfilling a promise Murphy made to readers earlier in the series’ run.
It’s a pretty appropriate choice for a comic about a future where getting behind the wheel of a car is against the law.
In the world of The Last Driver, America’s cities have embraced the GRID, a robotic transportation network that has made traditional automobiles obsolete and illegal.
Unfortunately for the authorities, Clutch isn’t particularly interested in following the rules.
When his granddaughter’s life is threatened, the outlaw driver gets back behind the wheel, setting off a dangerous journey that becomes something much bigger than a family rescue mission.
What follows is a rebellion against technology, authoritarian control, and a society that has decided human drivers are no longer necessary.
Murphy, whose previous work includes Batman: White Knight, Tokyo Ghost, Punk Rock Jesus, and The Wake, has been having quite a run with the series.
The third printing of The Last Driver #1 featured a cover inspired by RoboCop. Now the fourth printing is heading in a completely different cinematic direction with Back to the Future.
Murphy himself seemed surprised by the continuing demand, expressing disbelief that the comic had reached a fourth printing before confirming he would deliver the movie-inspired cover he had promised.
The Last Driver #1 fourth printing arrives at comic book shops on Wednesday, November 11, 2026.
Meanwhile, the series isn’t waiting around for readers to catch up.
The Last Driver #3 arrives October 21, followed by the second printing of issue #2 on October 28. Issue #4 is scheduled for November 25, with the fifth and final issue arriving December 30.
For a story set in a future where cars have been outlawed, The Last Driver certainly has no trouble keeping its engine running.
And if Murphy keeps finding inspiration in classic movies, comic collectors might start wondering what he’ll put on a cover next.
Maybe somebody should check whether Clutch has a flux capacitor hidden under the hood.
